"Scusa ma io ho bisogno di scrivere il mio review in inglese perche' io voglio essere pricisa. I can't say enough how fantastic Marzia is as a tutor. She's intelligent, kind, well-spoken and a good listener. I told her today that my traguarda is to be solidly in the "intermediate Italian speakers' camp" by December of this year. Marzia gave me tips toward that end: 1.) She said I have a good vocabulary (coming from a person for whom Italian is their madrelingua, that's high praise!); 2.) She asked me if I use a translator when I write essays for her. I said "I use one, but I don't 'plug my words' into the computer and them slavishly copy what comes out." Translators can be screwy sometimes. I have a PhD (Theology and 16th/17th century Italian art history) and a deep background in the Romance languages of French, Latin, and Spanish. I have an excellent grasp of what words and phrases "work" in another language and which do not, i.e. the "idiome." What's wrong, she and I agree, is that as an academic I'm given to the expression of high-flown thoughts and ideas. Use simpler language when you go from English to Italian is her advice. 3.) Brush up on i verbi tempi e i coniugazioni! In the fall of this year I will have studied with Marzia for two years, not counting outside programs. I know, senza dubbio, that I wouldn't be as far along as I am were it not for her guidance. (I'd like to go to Italy again, not as a scholar this time, but to truly enjoy a country I've come to love. If I learn Italian reasonably well I think I'll do okay!) " "Scusa ma io ho bisogno di scrivere il mio review in inglese perche' io voglio essere pricisa. Marzia and I started our third year together on 10/4/2023. She's a fantastic teacher and I really enjoy my time with her. She's working with me on the subjunctive mood right now. I write essays for her to review. I don't want my sentences to be complex; Marzia says that, what I consider "straightforward" in English is, in point of fact, much more complex in italiano. On we go, and I'm hanging on! :)
