Ciao!
My name is Marzia and I am a native Italian language teacher! Are you interested in learning Italian to travel to Italy, to learn more about the Italian culture, or to connect with your Italian roots? Whatever your reason, I’d be happy to help you!
I have been teaching online for more than five years and I am passionate about sharing my love for my language with my students. I teach students of all ages and levels.
Lessons are based on the needs of my students. Some students prefer the traditional grammar approach, while others want to focus on conversation from the very first lesson. Regardless, my approach is communicative to enable my students to comfortably and confidently speak Italian since I believe that the purpose of a language is communication!
I use authentic materials including newspapers, magazines and listening exercises. This helps my students in their language journey since our lessons are more interesting.
If you would like to become more comfortable speaking Italian, I can help you! I know from personal experience that language learning takes perseverance and motivation and am ready to help you stay motivated! Learning while having fun is the key to success!
I would love to meet you and talk about your Italian language goals during a trial lesson!
A presto!

Marzia Peirano has been my outstanding Italian tutor since 2021. As a retired academic with a PhD in Theology and Italian Renaissance Art History, I've both studied and taught extensively, allowing me to quickly identify her superior teaching qualities. My confidence in Italian, both written and spoken, has soared under her two-year instruction. Her notable contributions helped me earn a prestigious fellowship from La Scuola Italiana at Bennington College for my research on 17th-century painter Lavinia Fontana. Despite my late start in learning Italian, my goal is to become a translator and interpreter, and I believe Marzia can guide me towards this future. Marzia's dedication has led me from a beginner's level to an intermediate stage, inspiring confidence in my potential to speak Italian fluently. I highly value and appreciate her exemplary teaching.

It was wonderful to start up again with our lessons. Marzia was very welcoming yet patient. I feel enthusiastic about future lessons.

Scusa ma io ho bisogno di scrivere il mio review in inglese perche' io voglio essere pricisa. I can't say enough how fantastic Marzia is as a tutor. She's intelligent, kind, well-spoken and a good listener. I told her today that my traguarda is to be solidly in the "intermediate Italian speakers' camp" by December of this year. Marzia gave me tips toward that end: 1.) She said I have a good vocabulary (coming from a person for whom Italian is their madrelingua, that's high praise!); 2.) She asked me if I use a translator when I write essays for her. I said "I use one, but I don't 'plug my words' into the computer and them slavishly copy what comes out." Translators can be screwy sometimes. I have a PhD (Theology and 16th/17th century Italian art history) and a deep background in the Romance languages of French, Latin, and Spanish. I have an excellent grasp of what words and phrases "work" in another language and which do not, i.e. the "idiome." What's wrong, she and I agree, is that as an academic I'm given to the expression of high-flown thoughts and ideas. Use simpler language when you go from English to Italian is her advice. 3.) Brush up on i verbi tempi e i coniugazioni! In the fall of this year I will have studied with Marzia for two years, not counting outside programs. I know, senza dubbio, that I wouldn't be as far along as I am were it not for her guidance. (I'd like to go to Italy again, not as a scholar this time, but to truly enjoy a country I've come to love. If I learn Italian reasonably well I think I'll do okay!)
